First Grade....CA CHING!!!

On Friday, I started a much needed vacation. It was Danielle's last day of school, so I thought I would pick her up at school and take her for ice cream. I waited for the kids to walk by one by one, class by class. Of course, on this day, the last day of school, Danielle's class was LAST to be dismissed.

When she came out finally, she had a rather large "memory book" from Kindergarten. There were worksheets and photos and a little note from Mrs. Allie. Of course, I had to look at it in the school lobby. I was doing pretty good until I got to the teachers note. Its one thing to think to yourself that you have a pretty good kid, but to have it confirmed by a teacher is something else entirely. I admit, those darn "Im so proud of you" tears started to well up. "Mommy! Wait til we get into the car if your going to do that!"

Danielle's report card was good. No A or B grades or letters of any kind for Kindergarten...just number scores....4 meaning youre a genius and 1 meaning "not so good with the skills". Danielle got one 4 related to reading and mostly 3's (secure) and 2 2's (not so secure but gettiing there). Her 2's were about comparing math sentences with quantitative words. (i thought to myself ...well she is only 5) And there it was at the top of her report card...Grade for next year: 1. WOW i thought to myself. First Grade. I asked her if she was excited to be going to first grade and she said "Yes. When can we go and get my lunch box and thermos?" Danielle is very excited to be able to eat a lunch at school that she can help me pack. (Danielle doesnt eat sandwiches....no PBJ, no cheese sandwich, no bologna, no turkey......HMMMMMMMM this will be a challenge.) As we walked out to the car, she said "Mommy? Am I really going to be in first grade?" I reply "Yes Baby, youre officially in first grade" She stops walking and just stands there for a minute. When she looks up at me with that smile...she said "First Grade? CA CHIIINNNNGGG" and pumped her fists like Tiger Woods sinking a putt to win the Masters. Priceless. Im glad I picked her up.

We had a little dinner with Busia and Dziadzia at the house to celebrate....Hooray for first grade.

Sunny Saturday

It was such a nice day out today that I decided to take the girls to a petting zoo. We had a great time. We saw animals, rode the carousel, took a train ride and had a little lunch. I think the girls enjoyed themselves.

Mommy and Danielle: 1, The Ice : 0

Well, Im sure you will all be tuning in to see how we did with our first class.

I was sick to my stomach all day!!!!! All I could think about was the inevitable....my backside hitting the cold, hard ice. Ample as my tush may be, I was still not all that thrilled about the whole skating idea.

We arrived at Rinkside and got our skates without difficulty. We checked the list to see what sign to look for on the ice....we were the only names on the class list. (I think to myself that maybe this whole mommy and me thing will get cancelled.) At 5:45 Miss Catie swooshes over to us and calls our name. (no turninng back now).

Miss Catie explains that she is going to teach us how to fall on the floor first before we go on the ice. We spend a few minutes learning how to fall...and more importantly get back up. And then we are off...to the rink. Miss Catie swoops in and carries Danielle out to the ice. I stand on the floor waiting for her to come back and get me. (this doesnt happen....the Mommies are supposed to get out there on there own) So, I take a deep breath and step on to the ice....I wobble, I shake....BUT I DO NOT FALL. I did feel like a life size Weeble though. For the next 30 minutes, we march with our arms out to the side, learn to balance and play with some toys Miss Catie has thrown on the ice for us. We march and march. Back and forth...red line to red line. Danielle is a natural. She did GREAT. My baby didnt fall one time. She laughed and giggled (mostly at me) and had the time of her life.

Afterwards, BJ, Mommy and Danielle went for pizza.

All in all...we took this one from the ice.....Next Monday could be a different story, but for today. we are "high Fiving" and feeling pretty good about ourselves.

Danielle's Turn to dress up

Today was Danielle's Prom Day at Pitter Patter....her daycare. The kids get a chance to dress up and play grown up for a day. Here is Danielle in her new pink dress and fancy sandals.

Here is another shot of her at the house.

And here she is with her "date". The teachers select a "date" for each of the kids.

Bj finished his finals today....god willing when grades come out, Brian and I will be parents of a SENIOR. (When did I get this old?) Danielle has one more week until she is out. I am taking a much needed vacation to spend some time with her starting Friday.

The weather here has seemed to turn into spring/summer for us so we are looking forward to getting outside to enjoy it. Danielle and I plan on learning to Rollerblade this summer (as if Ice Skating wasnt enough). They designed a new forest preserve trail near the house that we hope to know well before the fall.

Hope all is well where you are.
