First Grade....CA CHING!!!
On Friday, I started a much needed vacation. It was Danielle's last day of school, so I thought I would pick her up at school and take her for ice cream. I waited for the kids to walk by one by one, class by class. Of course, on this day, the last day of school, Danielle's class was LAST to be dismissed.
When she came out finally, she had a rather large "memory book" from Kindergarten. There were worksheets and photos and a little note from Mrs. Allie. Of course, I had to look at it in the school lobby. I was doing pretty good until I got to the teachers note. Its one thing to think to yourself that you have a pretty good kid, but to have it confirmed by a teacher is something else entirely. I admit, those darn "Im so proud of you" tears started to well up. "Mommy! Wait til we get into the car if your going to do that!"
Danielle's report card was good. No A or B grades or letters of any kind for Kindergarten...just number scores....4 meaning youre a genius and 1 meaning "not so good with the skills". Danielle got one 4 related to reading and mostly 3's (secure) and 2 2's (not so secure but gettiing there). Her 2's were about comparing math sentences with quantitative words. (i thought to myself ...well she is only 5) And there it was at the top of her report card...Grade for next year: 1. WOW i thought to myself. First Grade. I asked her if she was excited to be going to first grade and she said "Yes. When can we go and get my lunch box and thermos?" Danielle is very excited to be able to eat a lunch at school that she can help me pack. (Danielle doesnt eat sandwiches....no PBJ, no cheese sandwich, no bologna, no turkey......HMMMMMMMM this will be a challenge.) As we walked out to the car, she said "Mommy? Am I really going to be in first grade?" I reply "Yes Baby, youre officially in first grade" She stops walking and just stands there for a minute. When she looks up at me with that smile...she said "First Grade? CA CHIIINNNNGGG" and pumped her fists like Tiger Woods sinking a putt to win the Masters. Priceless. Im glad I picked her up.
We had a little dinner with Busia and Dziadzia at the house to celebrate....Hooray for first grade.
