Backyard fun
So, a couple of weekends ago, the entire Fuller Family decided to do some yardwork. Bj and I were in the back yard moving dirt and I spotted something out of the corner of my eye. It was green with a yellowish stripe. I figured it was the garden hose. Whatever it was, it was going to be in my way so I went to grab it and move it. Funny thing is, IT MOVED FIRST. I think i jumped higher than I ever have and am sure I said something that Danielle would have put me in time out for. "BJ!!!! BJ!!!!" I hollered. Then i thought I better not holler so Danielle didnt come out in the backyard. That little bugger was now on the run, hiding in the lilac bushes. "BJ. I need you to get this snake out of the bushes before Danielle comes out here." If you all could have seen the look on his face. It was kind of like..."Uh Jennifer, I dont know if you are aware, but I dont know a thing about catching a snake". Below you can see that I was not successful in keeping Danielle from being aware of the snake and that Danielle was far from scared of "that little snake" (Really, it was not so little. AND we discovered that there was more than one.)

Here are my brave snake catchers.

AND SUCCESS...the boys were able to lure the snake into a small garbage can with the end of a golf club and a long paint roller extender. (not quite the snake catching tools I would have used but seeing as how I was scared silly, I was not going anywhere near the thing.

Brian set the snake free in the pond. FAR out into the pond.
Little did I know that the other snake, which I was originally told was also caught had fallen into our window well. (and yes, it is covered) That little bugger slithered in the the little crack of space between the hinge and the actual window well. Bj and his friends Kevin and Kevin had to come over and get the snake out of the window well later the next day so I could use the home gym down in the basement. That's another story though.

Anyway...afterwards, Danielle went on to planting her seeds in a flower pot. She planted some sunflower seeds. Hopefully they will sprout for her. She had a mishap at school with the seeds they tried to grow and was really upset, so I thought we would give it a shot at home. So far we have some sprouts from her seeds and she is very proud. Mommy hopes Grandpa Ray is up there with his green thumb sending her a good growing vibe.

She had great fun this year helping me pick the flowers. Needless to say it is a colorful yard.
And when she isnt planting, she is relaxing in her backyard tent. Brian set it up for her and put the computer out there for her one day and it was if she had her own house. She stayed in there ALL afternoon. She even let Graycie in to play with her.

And special thanks to BJ who spent 4 hours and placed 122 screws in putting together the fire pit that my parents bought for us the year we moved into the house as my birthday gift. Fitting that he put it together just in time for my birthday this year. We enjoyed the fire, and of course the smores. Couldnt see any satellites though!!

So many thoughts - not sure where to begin......
"Lure the snake into a small garbage can..." Animal rights' activists might call that luring with a golf club and a paint roller extender by some other term. Did you at least first try to encourage the little thing to leave on its own? Perhaps Uncle Chris could have shared some of his tried and true techniques with your little band of reptile removers. Maybe Trapper Dan would have had some insight or advice.
Just a suggestion but one of BJ's first electives should be "Animal Kingdom 101" or " Nature- Sharing my Backyard with God's Little Creatures" or "Capture and Release 103".
It is also interesting to note that there seems to be undisputable photographic evidence of a capture and release of some sort but no actual photo of the culprits. Which brave soul ran for a camera in this situation but took no pic of the scaly intruders?
Years ago on Brice Avenue a bird made its way into the family room. The screams of delight from a certain family member(currently known as Now Im the Mommy) could be heard for blocks as we tried to get this little creature of God to leave the premises with open door and a gentle wave of a broom. In this case talking first and asking it to leave did not work over said screams of delight from the blog author.
Very nice post. Thanks for sharing and hope Danielle's flowers bloom in abundance. Gramps is probably watching them grow with pride.
First of all, I was not getting any closer to that thing than I had to...and Secondly, I believe that the so called "bird incident on brice" is where i learned the words i from Daddy that i screamed when i saw the snake. I also do not recall any "gentle" waving of the broom.
I'm pretty disappointed also that we didn't get to see any pictures of the main character in the story.

PS. Just how far back is that pond? Didn't look too distant in one of the pictures. I'd watch where I walk from now on.
I'm guessing then the "learned" words for removing critters weren't "Shoo, shoo" little snake!

The pond is at the edge of our back yard. But if you will notice, he is on the other side of those electrical/phone box thingies signaling he is really in our neighbors backyard when he is setting little snakey free.

At least I don't feel as bad now the year I was curiously looking at "weird painted crocus bulbs" and then proceeded to scream and throw baby turtles out of my hand as they decided to pop their legs, arms and heads out all at once.
If I were Danielle I would be very careful of who or what I let enter my backyard tent.
